ALL ABOUT DIOR: BLUE!

For this fifth episode in the saga of Christian Dior’s favorite colors, we turn the spotlight on blue, the royal color dear to the couturier’s heart.

« Colors are marvelous, and they show you off to your best, but you must be sure to choose them with care. Color necessitates renewal. Would we appreciate the blue sky as much if it was always blue? It’s the clouds in perpetual motion that make the sky so beautiful.” Christian Dior loved blue. It reminded him of the era of kings and queens dressed in the color of the sky. It reminded him of Marie Antoinette, an unforgettable figure of history, and one he adored. Christian Dior loved blue, for blue was the color of royalty. “Among all colors, only navy blue can compete with black and offer the same advantages. Light blue is one of the most ravishing of colors, and if you have blue eyes no other color will better suit you,” wrote the couturier in his  Little Dictionary of Fashion in 1954. Deep, sensual and mysterious, blue at Dior is the color of daring. Dressmaking daring, firstly, as in the  Junon dress created by Christian Dior in 1949. In gray tulle, this evening frock is entirely embroidered in midnight blue sequins.

It crossed the Atlantic to live with its new owner, a rich heiress nicknamed “the blue client” after her passion for the color. Or, there’s the example of this haute couture outfit designed by Raf Simons for his first collection in July: on the spreading skirt, embroidered flowers bloom in tints of blue. There’s also much daring in evidence when it comes to cosmetics, thanks to the untrammeled imagination of Tyen, creative director of Dior Make-up. In 1984, he broke the mold with the first electric blue mascara, composed of blue-reflecting pigments. At Dior, beauty products have existed in shades of blue since 1949, when the Baccarat crystal company produced the house’s first glass bottle, a midnight blue amphora for the perfume  Diorama. The same holds true today as, from the  Midnight Poison flacon to the lipstick tubes, the world of Dior beauty has made its home in cases and containers in nighttime hues – indispensible accessories with which to shine under the midnight sun.
