IN the nice-in-theory-but-not-quite-so-good-in-reality (security bag checks, lifts, stairs, not really enough room to move) surround of the Science Museum this afternoon, the original Fashion Fringe winning design duo Basso & Brooke showcased their spring/summer 2009 collection, entitled High-Tech Romance.
"We were inspired by the Japanese notion of flow, laws and metrics of their unique aesthetic," explained the designers of their influence, The Tale of Genji, a story offering insight into the spirit and grandeur of the Heian era of Japan.
Tottering on the highest of heels (which were elegantly sculpted like ornate vase handles and boasted the biggest of platform soles), models, their hair lifted into a cool new variation of the quiff and styled with gigantic Kirby grips created by Stephen Jones, appeared in a kaleidoscope of chaotically stunning prints on tight dresses in kimono styles, their waists cinched by bold, origami folded belts.
Drenched in colour – aqua, purple, crimson, pink and yellow – looks were further brought to life through pin tuck details with flowers literally unfurling from the folds of the manipulated fabric, and plaited and woven constructions, in silk jersey and duchesse satin, embraced the body with paradisiacal prints; butterflies, rabbits, waves and Japanese calligraphy.
