My Interview with Daniela & Nicola of SAFIYAA
I can always rely on my pal Erin Knowles. She always knows about the latest things that are happening and not so long ago introduced me to this sleek & sophisticated new label, SAFIYAA. The brainchild of Daniela Karnuts & Nicola Kuda, these two women have 12 years of design between them, but have just launched their second collection for their brand, Spring/Summer 2013.
I spent an afternoon with them, fawning over their creations and playing dress up over a passion fruit mousse.
Between each delectable mouthful and outfit change, this is what I got out of them:
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
DANIELA: Depth, spirit, love, truth, class, elegance and the power to make a change. You create your reality as beautiful as you dare too.
NICOLA: For me ‘design’ has two aspects: the visual and the emotional. I get inspired by a lot of things that inform and influence the look and shape of a collection. Music, geometry, colours, architecture, dreams, nature & people…
For the emotional perspective I try to understand how we want the woman who is wearing the collection to feel. Why should she love to wear it? That’s the part when we bring careful detailed technical experience and loving attention to the collection to turn the pieces into one offs that you simply don’t want to take off.
WHO IS THE SAFIYAA WOMAN? WHAT QUALITIES DOES SHE POSSES?
DANIELA: The Safiyaa woman is a woman with dignity, grace, strength from within, femininity and brilliance and someone of power; in her career, her family life or in herself
NICOLA:…..and she believes in the power and beauty of simplicity.
WHERE DOES THE NAME COME FROM?
DANIELA: Safiyaa stands for purity and friendship. Nicola and I have been friends for ten years and our collection is very pure. Striking colours and simple, refined cuts. It is also the name of my daughter and I believe in classic fashion pieces that can last over generations.
WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE WORD?
DANIELA: Together with the people I love
NICOLA: I couldn’t agree more with Daniela.
LATE NIGHTS OR EARLY MORNINGS?
DANIELA: Late nights filled with deep conversations
NICOLA: Both. I normally do Pilates at 7 in the morning. Late nights are more to share precious moments or good music on the dance floor.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT BRITISH FASHION TODAY? WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNERS?
DANIELA: I love fashion but I am also very practical. I am a mother of two children and I am working so I appreciate wearable fashion of timeless elegance. I adore Azzedine Alaia. I wear Lanvin shoes for flats, Christian Louboutin for heels, Lucien Pellat Finet for cashmere. I also like the work of Peter Pilotto and Christopher Bailey.
NICOLA: Apart from Christian Louboutin I have to confess I’m not a very faithful customer, I like certain collections and then I might not like the season after. I think sometimes collections change too drastically. Normally it’s some pieces here and there, but at the moment I like Peter Pilotto, Tom Binns and Charlotte Olympia…
WHAT ARE YOUR DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS FOR YOUR LABEL?
DANIELA: It makes me very happy to see women feeling comfortable and beautiful in their own skin. It is my aspiration to give them this feeling with our collection.
NICOLA: “You can have whatever you want as long as you dress for it,” said Edith Head.
I hope that’s what our customers will associate with Safiyaa.
In my opinion, Safiyaa is a label that rather refreshingly transcends the ages. I wear it, my mother could wear it. Their tailoring is second to none and the colours they use are vibrant, juicy and gem like. The textures of silks and satins are luxurious and sexy and the fits make you feel like your naked, streamlined beautifully against your body. The gold & black zips add to the sexiness, they accentuate parts of your body that you didn’t know you had. (In my case, my bottom!! Glory be!!) I envisage the pieces being worn to weddings, seeing in the wee early hours of the morning, on holiday, on the red carpet or even to work. If I need a power fix, I know who to turn too. Daniela & Nicola are not only gorgeous but they are sassy and spiritual, and deeply talented. I wore the outfit below a couple weeks ago out on the town. Grazia, French Vogue & Who What Wear wanted to know what I was wearing the day after. I think that pretty much says it all….
FIVE THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT DANIELA & NICOLA…
What’s the last book you read and loved?
DANIELA: A course in miracles by Dr Helen Schucman
NICOLA: The power of NOW, Eckhart Tolle
DESCRIBE YOUR HOME’S AESTHETIC
DANIELA:Graffiti art, European and Indian impressionist art, Chinese calligraphy, jazz, house music, flowers and love
NICOLA: A lot of daylight, a lot of space, always music. Mostly smelling of fresh coffee and fruit bowls.
WHAT ARE YOUR VICES?
NICOLA: being a control freak
DANIELA: being a control freak
YOUR GO TO BEAUTY PRODUCT?
DANIELA: Dr Haushka, La toleriane
NICOLA: Cellex-C and Davines as I’m a hair freak
WHAT POSSESSION WILL YOU NEVER THROW AWAY?
DANIELA:I am a “herdler (hoarder)” as my husband calls me so I don’t like to throw anything away, except irrelevant clothes
NICOLA: I still have discussions with my mum when I find out she was throwing something that I didn’t even remember existed. Regarding clothes my 7 year old niece has set out to inherit my clothes especially the Louboutins and all the long dresses that look like a “princess dress”, so I have an excuse not to throw any of them away.
Myself with Alpha Nero (a blue Weimaraner) “he is an integral part of the family” and a real heart breaker

In Shanghai with Louis Vuitton: Part 2
I wore a 70′s inspired asymmetric sequinned dress from the new cruise collection with a splash of lipstick in a gothic plum colour. When we arrived at the venue I was blown away by the view. It was like being stuck inside a computer game, but a really beautiful one.

As we took our seats for the show, steam was emanating from behind steel slide gates and I could hear the familiar chuff chuff of the LV steam train. The collection was empowering, with all its layers, deeply luxurious, something from another time. I was obsessed by the Willy Wonka-esque glasses and floppy 50′s hats, designed by the wonderful Stephen Jones.

Next to the famous LV Express
After the show we hit the after party, which could only be described as a large tent designed to look like the interior of a train, complete with booths & waiters dressed up like porters. The luscious Lana Del Rey lulled us late into the night. I climbed on tables, shoes in hand, and danced like nobody was watching.

Admittedly the boy had to work HARD at bringing me back to reality the next morning, back to Blighty. Shanghai a not so distant memory, never to be forgotten.
All Aboard the Louis Vuitton Express in Mystical Shanghai
A leather LV bag tag dropped through my letter box. It was an invitation, enticing me out to Shanghai to view the Autumn/Winter LV collection. Unquestionably it was a yes. I had seen the show back in February in Paris and just the thought of it gave me goose bumps. I had also never really travelled east before and I’d been longing to do so for too long. With my boy as my dream date and a suitcase filled with LV delights and wares we begun our journey.
We touched down early in the morning, with a warm mist encircling the tarmac. I was struck by how clean, quiet and deeply mysterious the city was, almost dreamlike. And a lot lusher than I thought. A lot of tropical green and high rise buildings that reached up to the stars.
We arrived at our hotel, The Park Hyatt, which was made up of a whopping 92 floors and looked distinctly like a bottle opener. Our suite was immense, P Diddy would be envious and we had a bath big enough to throw a pool party in. The shower was merely a monsoon, I could even make foam angels on the tiled floor.
An LV surprise in our bedroom
After eighteen bowls of pork dim sum and a cat nap I went into hair & make-up opting for a completely natural look, trying to complement my pale pink chiffon dress. It had a romantic vintage feel about it, getting me in the mood. We met Alexa in the hotel lobby for a quick whisky and off we headed to the opening of the new Louis Vuitton store. The interior was insane, spiral gold stair cases, a trillion dazzling lights and textured walls. After the party we trotted off to a stunning colonial building complete with pillars and palm trees where we listened to a pianist whilst eating fresh fish and lemon tart. I oooooed and ahhhhed over old friends, Miss Chung, Derek Blasberg, Alexia Niedzielski, Elizabeth Von Guttman & Clemence Posey and caught up until I was blue in the face. And ready for bed.

At 9am the next morning we were taken to a Chinese doctor for acupuncture and massage and guzzled jasmine tea. Then off to a market within the french concession where I picked up lots of funny bits, silk shoes for my niece, novelty glasses, two china cats & a wooden miniature warrior. With the retail therapy over and done with, we headed back to the hotel to prepare for the nights extravaganza.
Bits & Bobs
Stay tuned for more from Shanghai tomorrow!

Shooting My Second Nails Inc Campaign
This week I shot my second campaign for Nails Inc at Big Sky Studios. It was for their A/W collection so I got to play & test all the new and up-and-coming shades. I truly believe that Nails Inc are pioneers in the beauty industry and every season they bring out exciting & innovative effects. On set I became obsessed with Concrete, a polish that when it drys has a matte & concrete like consistency, very cool & urban, in neon yellow and Baker Street blue…

Chanel Couture Show in Paris
Bonjour mes petites pois,
I have just arrived back from sunny Paris, where I attended the beauteous CHANEL Haute Couture show at le Grand Palais.
Le Grand Palais
Here is my story…
On the morning of the show I wake early in a white fluffy bed, big enough to swim in. It’s time to dress, and I opt for a white silk shirt with 70′s cuffs with a light denim pencil skirt from last year’s cruise. With my fail safe Givenchy glitters, a teal blue Chanel clutch and a pair of John Lennon inspired Raybans in pink, I feel inspired & a little sick with excitement. After seeing the invitation & antique roses sent to my room, I dig out my Mademoiselle Rouge Coco lipstick & apply lashings of inimitable mascara. I pin my messy bed hair up into a mid beehive, trying to channel the 60′s. Today, I want to look old school.
Earlybird arriving at the show & The stairs
I arrive at the show early (definitely a first) and as I enter the Grand Palais I’m astounded by the beams of sunshine and stunning architecture above my head. A beige winding carpet greets me with rose bushes in large wooden boxes on either side. As I climb the gleaming gold stairs I begin to realise that I’m in the midst of a Chanel Alice in Wonderland-esque garden party, complete with white wicker chairs and handsome waiters wandering the room with trays of lemonade & pomegranate juice. A lot of the room is panelled with hand drawn pictures of antique doors and picture frames, all the size of small palaces, and the ceiling is truly something to behold. A swirl of clouds, again all hand drawn. Just breathtaking, and surreal. Even Michelangelo would be proud.
A rose brush & a hand painted door
Caroline Sieber is the first of my pals to arrive in a white tweed shift dress and Maison Michel boating chapeau, followed by Alexa, in a Chanel mini, navy blue jumper and legs that reach up to the stars. Olivier Theyskens is next, a vision in white followed by fashion icons such as, Grace Coddington, Patrick Dermachelier, Katie Grand & Anna Wintour. As I take my seat I notice a cake plate of mini pastries & macaroons in front of me. I begin to feast in anticipation.

A couple in white & YUM
The lights go down and I’ve got butterflies in my tummy. The rumbling beats of Michel Gaubert’s genius emanates throughout the room and out comes Jamie Bochert, opening the show in tweed & glittery wool. The atmosphere is nonchalant, and deeply feminine. I see a lot of patch work knits in grey & dusty pinks. Little details: the silver shimmer eye shadow, sheeny tights and embellished hair nets evoke feelings of vintage, antique, almost 70′s. Breathtaking dresses hit the runway, shimmering and slinking gently down the catwalk. I spy a turquoise and pink sequinned jumpsuit which makes me salivate in my seat, I just want to reach out and touch EVERYTHING. Heavy sleeves, fluffy skirts and layers of sparkle take centre stage, all so romantic and devastatingly pretty. Lindsey Wixson is the last to appear, in what one could only describe as a sensation. A white wedding dress (a meringue but in a REALLY good way), made up of layer upon layer of chiffon & feathers, with a large pink bow at the back. She looks like a swan and glides around the room, doll like and dreamy. Karl comes out for the finale and takes his bow, to a raucous applause. He’s nailed it. Again. I’m in awe.
I’m literally counting the days until the next Chanel invitation drops through my letter box. Quelle surprise will it be this time?

As Alice would say, Curiouser & Curiouser….

My Holiday in Corfu
Monsoon Motilos,
Sitting in the hideous pouring rain on the Eurostar & thought I might cheer myself up (and you lot, hopefully) by getting into the summer mood with a little post about CORFU, one of my favourite places in the world….
A view for two…
Here are some colourful snap shots of my trip this year. Just looking at them is making me dribble onto my laptop… TAKE ME BACK!!
Sunset
The house I stayed in belongs to one of my best friends (India Langton) and her family. Its dreamlike, completely out of this world.
Ping pong table under a canopy of vines & Brightly coloured pot plants
Stairs down to the sea & The all important cocktail bar
Backgammon & Me in my new shades bought from the local town of Kassiopi
Almost tropical & Greek nibbles
Lights hanging above the dining room table. Al fresco. & Lace above my bed
Beer’o'clock & James enjoying the local taverna on Agni beach
One of the bathroom walls, made up entirely of shells
A summer inspired beach bag & India with Dolly…
Indias mother Carole Langton started up this incredible charity called CARE which looks after homeless dogs & puppies in Corfu. As a result, the house is filled with adorable, fun loving dogs who somewhere along the line have been rescued by one of the family… They always make the holiday THAT much more enjoyable and memorable… If you’re a mad canine lover (like myself) then feel free to check out the website at http://www.carecorfu.com.
The Girls, dressed head to toe in Beach Candy & The designer, Sophie Paget-Stevenson with Indie
Beach Candy must haves……
Stun-ning kaftans & dresses in ethical prints http://beach-candy.com/shop/ My sunshine wardrobe complete!!
And not forgetting the lads in their Frangipani shirts, (India & her boyfriend Numa’s company)
Some of the awesome prints… http://www.facebook.com/frangipanistyle

Glamour Magazine Awards
Hola Magical Motilos,
I’ve just returned from a night in glorious Madrid where Glamour magazine was celebrating its tenth anniversary. I managed to pick up an award for Style Icon of the year, and as the only thing I’ve ever won in my life is five Euros off an Easyjet scratch card, I was alarmingly amazed and deeply honoured.
I wore a white pleated ethereal dress from Jonathan Saunders, a pair of Givenchy glittery heels and a vintage bag from a hippy market in Ibiza.
Arriving at the Awards & My Hippy Market Clutch
I stayed in a wonderful hotel called the San Marcos which resembled an old french chateau and emanated sweet jasmine from the windows. The event was held at the Italian embassy which was equally as impressive.
The Red Dining Room in the Hotel & The Art Deco Inspired Bar
The Fountain of Love & The Chateau-esque Windows
We feasted on Jamon Iberico & bottles of Heineken amongst powder pink roses under the stars, listening to a DJ set by the wild & kooky Marco.
The DJ (with the chicest CD box ever!)
Other winners included the luscious Lily Donaldson, Eugenia Silva, Giles Deacon, Petra Nemcova and Jason Lewis AKA Smith Jerrod…. (YES the hotty from Sex & the City) YUMMA. Spain always makes me smile….
