For the dedicated follower of fashion, July means only one thing: couture! Editors, commentators, hacks, high rollers and attention junkies descend on Paris from all corners to witness fashion's bi-annual swoon. Everywhere, under the dappled shade of lime trees in the Palais Royale, in the hushed courtyard of the Hotel Costes, and the echoing mausoleum of the Crillon (fortunately about to be revamped), deals are done, decisions made and careers dissected. If the barnstorming bread and circus shows of a decade ago have largely given way to intimate presentations 'pour les clients,' and front row star power has dwindled to the point where a Kardashian is welcome, that too is part of couture's constant evolution. Still, there is magic in the air; in Valli's romanticism, in Valentino's refinement, in Versace's va va voom, and in Gaultier's subversive dazzle. Ca ce'st couture...
