Sicilian Majolica- from pottery to fashion!

For the FW pre-collection Dolce&Gabbana have gone native. Majolica print dresses, separates and accessories are the undisputed protagonists of the colourful beginning of the fall winter season.
Majolica is a form of glazing which was imported into Italy, Sicily to be precise, by the Moors in the early medieval period. From then, the Italian potters developed the glazing, adding colours and textures and created what today is a recognizable handicraft of theItalian tradition. Some kilns from the heyday of Majolica are still functioning today, including those in Caltagirone in Sicily.
Inspired by the tradition, and some of their furnishing in their property in Sicily, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana transport the typical prints associated with Majolica to fabric for a colourful, fun and idiosyncratically ironic portion of the FW13 collection.
Typically summery flowers like daisies and bougainvillea are beautifully transposed onto chiffon, cotton, charmeuse and brocade.

A straight leg cropped trouser at the ankles with a matching tunic is ever so chic and ever so sixties. Low heels and a small bag finish the outfit. Also a smart casual is a three piece: match the majolica print of the t-shirt and shorts and make a statement with a different patterned delicate appliqué flowers.

Majolica prints lend themselves perfectly for summer occasions, whether it’s a garden party or a lunch. A cute cotton dress with bow detail will bring a breath of summer wherever you are. While a high waist a line mini skirt matched to a crystal embellished white T are demure and chic. Add some sparkle with either high or flat bejewelled sandals.

Make an evening statement with majolica printed precious fabrics. Satin or chiffon, mini or maxi, city chic of boho chick, majolica prints are a must have. Roses and frangipani flowers add a romantic to any silhouette. Majolica printed wedges or a box clutch are a final touch or a statement when worn with block colour.

From the office to the cocktail bar: majolica print can be worn all over or mixed with precious brocade. Add sensible shoes, for an up to the minute fashion statement.
